Since I'd already painted the sky background in, I naturally continued with the purple mountains and the alluvial hills. I began to establish the wide range of colors, from the bright blue sky to the autumn-colored fields as I moved from background to foreground. Then I painted in the first layers of the bear's head and front paws. It will take many layers, moving from dark to light, to achieve the furriness of the face. Roughing in these areas at this point enabled me to get a feel for this bear's emerging personality. Admittedly, I went out of step by painting the drum face in before the parky behind it, but sometimes I find it expedient not to stick to the artists' code.
They're more like guidelines, anyway.
