Once I've transferred the drawing to watercolor paper, I want to make sure certain areas stay clean and unpainted until I am ready to address them.  Using a toothpick, I apply frisket to these areas, which appear grey in the photo.  The frisket effectively repels water and paint so I can freely wash in the large color areas.  As I start to build up layers of wash, the painting begins to come alive.
