Move Along
Rather than bog down on the problematic polar bear (after fooling with it for quite a while), I blocked in the grizzly and black bears. The reasoning behind this is simple. If I allow myself to focus in on one part of the painting to the exclusion of the rest, the whole will suffer and I probably will work it to death and not be happy with it anyway. If I move along and focus on other areas, the answer to the problem usually becomes clear to me. Also, I need to make sure the colors all work together at this foundational point. The polar bear's kuspuk actually started out as purple in the color sketches. It looked too middle-value, so I changed to the lighter, brighter value of yellow, which works much better.
