Tonight I chose the common raven as my subject. In Alaska the ravens were one of the few birds that wintered over and I gained great respect for them there. Curious and street-smart, scavengers and predetors, they also have a wonderful a sense of humor and a life-long devotion to their mate. We have lots of ravens in Arizona. Ravens are very entertaining to watch, and they love to torment my little Jack Russell Terrier who loves, in turn, to bark at them, racing along below in an effort to catch one. I could swear sometimes they slow down and circle back just to play a bit longer with her.
I took a picture of this bird perched on the Hopi House at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. From his bird's eye view he had a front row seat to watch the tourists streaming by.
