THREE GLASS BALLS STUDY

"THREE GLASS BALLS STUDY"

Day 2 of Leslie Saeta's 30-Paintings-In-30-Days
Today I painted a still life with a friend who hadn't picked up a paintbrush in 30 years. Instead of using my usual photo references, I decided to set up a still life of colorful hand-blown glass ornaments from Alaska. We spent the afternoon in the zone, talking about life, art, creativity, dogs who demolish the interiors of houses, and whatever else happened to come to mind while pushing color around on a canvas. It wasn't until 2/3 of the way through our paintings that I realized glass balls are not the easiest thing to cut one's teeth on when one is trying to learn to paint. We dealt with this revelation by calling our compositions "studies" and assuring ourselves if we only had more time we could "finish" them. Since my friend is a good sport who likes a challenge, the day was far from wasted. I look forward to our next painting session.
Next time I think I'll use fruit.
