IN MEMORY OF CHARLIE

CHARLIE
Celia and Jim never intended to get a puppy. They were retired on a very fixed income and had substantial health issues. But one magical day a friend dropped a tiny Maltese puppy into their laps and their hearts responded in unison. This little fella was definitely coming home.
Thus began a 13-year love affair with a little white ball of fluff they named "Charlie." Although small in stature, Charlie was giant in personality. He stole their slippers, their favorite spots on the couch, and tidbits from every meal they ate. But most of all, Charlie stole their hearts. Laughter and joy filled their home, replacing the dreariness of worry. Charlie's pint-sized devotion expanded their hearts through the years to come.
Then at the ripe old age of 90ish, Charlie went on to that great doggie park in heaven. Even two years later, his passing still hurts. When Celia told me they would never get another dog, I had to paint Charlie for them as a gift. Even though his new home is in heaven, Charlie's happy face has taken up residence in their home once again. I hope this painting bestows a memory and a smile whenever they see his mischievous little face looking expectantly at them as if to say,
"When are you coming home?"
